Upcoming work at the Lake

To All Members.

This is an update of the future works for the club lake in 2025. Last year I went on a 2 day Fishery Management course with the Environment Agency and brought some information back to the committee with some issues that we felt should be  implemented.

1. We have planted some reeds between pegs 1 and 7 which once the root system has been created will help to protect the bank to prevent the continuous rebuilding with wood. It will also give some coverage for the fish along this side of the lake. Should this be successful we will put more around the lake where the boards are.

2. We have arranged for the removal of the tree’s water side of the path around the lake. Upon inspection a number of trees were found to be diseased so need to be removed along with some that have started to lean. This in turn will cut down the amount of leaves going into the lake. By doing this it will enable the wind to give the movement of water which will help with the oxygen levels. The oxygen levels have fluctuated over the last year when regular checks have been made. We also want to remove the danger of any branches falling and causing injury or damage to members or their equipment.

Following on from the thinning out of trees new saplings will be planted. This work has all been agreed with the landowner.

The work has been booked for the 17th March for 3 weeks. Fishing will still be allowed during this period although being a bit noisy Monday to Friday. However there will be restrictions on where you can fish during the period.

FUNDING
Apply now for habitat and facilities projects

The latest round of the Fisheries Improvement Programme (FIP) is currently welcoming funding applications from clubs and fisheries seeking to improve natural habitats and general facilities for anglers. The application process is open until 31st January.
The Environment Agency has made money available directly from sales of coarse and trout fishing licences in England and therefore is ring-fenced for use in England on coarse and trout fisheries. You can read active ‘case studies’ reflecting what type of projects the FIP can support on the blog section of our website. The latest story reflects improvement work conducted on a river stretch in Hertfordshire and how those involved presented their successful application.

News from the Environment Agency

Building Bridges
Thanks to funding from the Environment Agency fishing licence sales, the Angling Trust’s Building Bridges Project regularly attends schools to teach youngsters about safe and legal fishing, and their most recent visit exceeded all expectations. The Ukrainian School in Nottingham were excited to welcome the team as they presented to youngsters, many of whom have recently fled the war in Ukraine.  Including a mixture of fun but educational presentations and games, as well as an art competition, it was amazing to see the joy and laughter brought to these young people, with lots of positive engagement, enthusiasm and questions asked throughout…including from the parents and teachers. There are already plans in place to take the families fishing at a lake, and the Building Bridges team are very excited to build on these new relationships within the Ukrainian community. Reaching out to new communities is essential and the demand for support is at an all-time high, with people eager to try fishing in a fun and safe environment.  Find out more

Barbel fitted with trackers stocked into the Severn

The West Midlands Environment Agency’s Fisheries Team is expanding its angler-driven citizen science study to explore whether stocking barbel in larger rivers, such as the River Severn, can enhance fish stock health and create more opportunities for anglers. The team is taking an innovative approach this year by collaborating with anglers and academic partners to trial advanced tracking technology.  Receivers in the river monitor barbel movements and provide long-term data on fish caught by anglers. The insights gained from this study aim to improve understanding of barbel behaviour and population dynamics, contributing to better fisheries management and angling effort. Find out more

Co-founder of the Avon Roach Project awarded in the
King’s New Year’s Honours list

Trevor Harrop, co-founder of The Avon Roach Project has received a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for his services to angling. Nominated by the Environment Agency, Trevor set up the ground-breaking project in 2005 with his close friend Budgie Price (who recently passed away) following an EA survey of the Hampshire Avon, which revealed that the roach population was absent or in decline in many stretches of the river. The project aimed to restore the roach population to the Hampshire Avon, which Trevor did by developing new techniques to restore stocks and manage habitats. His impact extends beyond the Avon with his techniques adopted in other UK rivers. Find out more
